5 more minutes!

I remember back in elementary school i hated taking naps. I used to think "I'm a big kid! I don't need to take a nap!" Well now, I'm in college and all I can think is "I'm a big kid! I NEED A NAP!!!!!!!!!" I love sleep! I would do it all day if I didn't have to go to class, be social, or have a life. But I am now at a point in my life where, as a student, I have to give up one of my favorite things and I'm not very happy about it. It's not just about not being able to take naps. You know that old saying - Early to bed, Early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise. Well I came up with a new one - Late to bed, Early to rise makes a person a college student. I'm lucky if I can get to sleep before two in the morning and then I have to be up so early in the morning for my classes. I even try to get to sleep before but end up just tossing and turning in that horrible half-asleep stage until I can finally let go! It's not fun!!! That's why I'm always so tired!

That is why the weekend is so Important! Sleeping in one weekends is god's gift to humanity! Some Saturdays I go into legal comas, sleeping for more than eighteen hours at a time and man do I feel great afterward. But then there is the greatest enemy of sleep, the alarm clock! I'm in love with my bed, but my alarm clock won't let us be together! I know that personally I threaten to kill my alarm clock every time it goes off, and I hit snooze a lot so it happens quite often.

I would give anything to get just a bit more sleep in my life, even if it was just a few more minutes. Hey wait, I have a few minutes before my next class! Nap, here I come!!!

Sunday Funday

"I wish it was Sunday, ‘cause that’s my fun day…”

I couldn’t agree with The Bangles more.

I love my Sundays. I’m a man. It’s football season. Now pay attention.

Man + Sunday = Football

Based on the equation above, I am unable to enjoy my Sunday without watching an NFL game.

If I were an animal at the zoo, my sign would say that I am prone to being irritable, distressed, and unfit to function normally if I am not able to watch a game. If you pay attention to the fine print, it says, “Warning! These behaviors could worsen drastically if the Ace misses a Colts game.”

But wait!

If you read the really fine print, you’ll find that I am unfit to function normally when I am watching a game, and I can be prone to being irritable and distressed based on who is winning or losing.

Okay, I admit it: I’m useless on Sundays. I am completely content with watching football all day, regardless of who’s playing.

For those out there who don’t watch/understand/like the sport, I can relate. I never watched football until four or so years ago. I became a fan because my new step dad was a fan. It was that simple.

Some may describe the sport as a bunch of gorillas hitting each other. They’re only partly right. There is so much strategy that goes into each and every play that I can’t completely explain it. Off the field, the politics of football could qualify as a soap opera (Brett Favre, anyone?). Whether it's game day or not, you can count on me watching ESPN or regularly checking online for NFL updates.

There is a reason why football is America’s new pastime. If you don’t understand, you’re going to have to watch it to find out.

Laziness: Why I Don't Deserve Health

In a press release issued on October 22nd by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the organization announced that by it's projections, the number of Americans with diabetes will double or even triple by the year 2050 "if current trends continue."

Such a projection becomes even more alarming when one considers the report's clarification that three times the current number of Americans with diabetes is equivalent to a third of the total adult U.S. population.

Listed as both a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and part of the reason for the increase described by the report's projection is obesity.

Being an obese person, I couldn't read this report without feeling guilty. Dont get me wrong; I understand that many factors can play a role in a person's weight, and that those factors can differ drastically from person to person. In my case, however, the reasons for my obesity are few and simple. I eat poorly, and rarely excercise. For obese individuals such as myself, CDC reports such as the aforementioned serve as a reminder that unless I can change my habits, I will eventually suffer for them.

Having a number of family members who suffer from diabetes, I have seen first hand what it can result in. Thus, the thought of becoming a diabetic due to my own poor choices is not just shameful, it's trully scary. With that said, I should add that I've read such reports before, and the initial shock of realizing that I am a statistic quickly goes away before self-disgust can motivate me to do a single thing about my situation.

Unfortunately, this is a blog entry with no snappy twist or happy ending. Even as I write this, I feel certain that today will be a day of sedentary gluttony, just as yesterday and the day before was. Sometime this evening, I know that I will eat a large meal that is heavy in fat and carbohydrates, and on a full stomach I will go to sleep having given my body nothing that could actually be called excercise.

In summary, I am physically lazy and do not care about my health. I state this bluntly because candy-coating the truth would only make me a liar.

Sometimes we beat our vices, and sometimes our vices beat us.
